Start with our fibre laser welder buyer’s guide to compare TRM cooling platforms, power, duty, controls and Class 4 planning. Use the applications hub to see where handheld laser welding fits across fabrication and repair. If your workflow also includes cutting parts from sheet, compare our fibre laser cutters. The fibre laser installation requirements guide covers services and floor planning for cutting cells; a handheld welder still needs its own site and Class 4 safety assessment. Our open-fibre-laser safety guide explains the wider risks around exposed beams.

Handheld fibre laser welding

Cleaner joints than TIG on thin sheet

Fibre laser welding puts heat into a narrow seam. On stainless, mild steel and aluminium that usually means less distortion than TIG and a faster travel speed than MIG on thin gauge — provided the joint is prepared and shielding gas is right. Typical work includes fabrication, enclosures, stainless assemblies and automotive repair. Suggested thickness depends on the platform: about 4 mm on 1.2–1.5kW, 6 mm on 2kW, and 8 mm on the 3kW LWH3000-S.

Material compatibility

What can they weld?

TRM G3 welders join stainless, mild and carbon steel, aluminium, copper, brass and other reflective alloys where process conditions allow. Shielding gas is customer-supplied argon or nitrogen. Always check alloy notes with your materials supplier before you weld dissimilar metals.

This list is not exhaustive. Confirm special welding and health-and-safety requirements with your materials supplier.

Class 4 laser safety

Essential Laser Welding Safety Tips and Guidence

For a safe and controlled laser welding environment, it is vital to use a laser-specific safety enclosure that isolates the welding unit and operators from the rest of the workshop. This ensures compliance with safety standards while maintaining a secure workspace.

  • Proper fume extraction

Install a dedicated extraction system within the enclosure to maintain air quality and remove hazardous fumes.

  • Personal protective equipment

Operators must wear welding gloves, safety coveralls, and a welding helmet with a laser-rated viewing panel for eye protection.

  • Laser safety eyewear

In addition to the welding mask, operators should use laser safety eyewear for maximum protection against laser exposure.

  • Class 4 laser compliance

Follow all relevant safety protocols, risk assessments, and operator training as required for high-powered Class 4 laser equipment.

This guidance serves as a basic overview of best practices for laser welding safety. It is essential to comply with local health and safety regulations and ensure all personnel are fully trained on potential hazards and required precautions.

Choosing and planning

TRM fibre laser welder questions

What is the difference between air-cooled and water-cooled TRM welders?

The 1.2kW LWH1200-AS is a compact, 41 kg air-cooled platform for mobile bays and light-gauge work. The 1.5kW, 2kW and 3kW S models are water-cooled and intended for longer production shifts and progressively thicker work.

Which TRM power level should I choose?

Choose from the work you run most often, not the highest available output. The suggested workpiece range is 0.4–4 mm for the 1.2kW and 1.5kW models, 0.4–6 mm for the 2kW model and 0.4–8 mm for the 3kW model. Joint design, material grade, preparation and shielding gas also affect the final process.

Is a wire feeder included with a TRM G3?

Yes. Every TRM G3 platform includes a single wire feeder as standard. A multi-wire feeder is an optional upgrade and is quoted with the machine when the application requires it.

What metals can a TRM fibre laser welder join?

TRM G3 welders are specified for stainless steel, mild and carbon steel, aluminium, copper, brass and other reflective alloys where the process conditions allow. Confirm unusual alloys and dissimilar-metal joints with your materials supplier before production welding.

What safety measures does a handheld fibre laser welder require?

A TRM G3 handheld welder is a Class 4 laser. The site needs a suitable risk assessment, a laser-specific enclosure, external interlocks, appropriate PPE, laser-rated eye and face protection, and fume extraction. The final arrangement must reflect the machine, process and local workplace requirements.

How are delivery, installation and training arranged?

Collection is the standard route. Delivery, offloading, siting, commissioning, safety briefing and operator training can be quoted to suit the workshop and the level of support required.

For a safe and controlled laser welding environment, it is vital to use a laser-specific safety enclosure that isolates the welding unit and operators from the rest of the workshop. This ensures compliance with safety standards while maintaining a secure workspace.

This guidance serves as a basic overview of best practices for laser welding safety. It is essential to comply with local health and safety regulations and ensure all personnel are fully trained on potential hazards and required precautions.
